About

Maddie is in the final months of her undergraduate degree at the Royal Academy of Music and is excited to continue shaping her career as a vocalist based in London. In 2021, she joined the Academy on a scholarship to pursue classical training under Marie Vassiliou and Marcus van den Akker, which provided a strong foundation for exploring vocal technique and blending genres.

Growing up in a musical household where diverse music was always being played, Maddie absorbed an eclectic range of music from an early age, listening to everything from classical to pop to soul to jazz. This helped shape her broad musical experience and influence her artistry. During her time at the Conservatoire, Maddie has been driven to hone her craft, with invaluable guidance from jazz vocal professors Anita Wardell and recently with Lauren Kinsella, as well as mentorship from British jazz vocalist Claire Martin OBE. Her studies continue to refine her unique sound through vocal interpretation, band-leading, and storytelling.

Described by colleagues and listeners as having an “old soul voice”, Maddie has a remarkable ability to tell a story through lyrics, captivating audiences with her strong stage presence, rich vocal tone, and expressive freedom. Wordplay plays a central role in her music, drawing inspiration from some of her greatest influences, including Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Barbra Streisand, Carmen McRae, Cecile McLorin Salvant, Karen Carpenter, and Samara Joy to name a few.

Since moving to London, Maddie has immersed herself in a variety of musical projects. She performs with her duo, WRENSONG, alongside pianist Ed Wren at venues such as Spice of Life, Next Door Records, Green Note, and Camden Club. Maddie also enjoys performing original arrangements of standards and groove tunes with The Gabriel Taylor Big Band, as well as with The Midnight Standard Quartet.

Maddie has participated in crossover works, such as Will Todd’s Jazz Mass, conducted by Jack Apperley, where she sang the soprano solo with the Epsom Choral Society, accompanied by a rhythm section featuring Lewis James on piano, Guy Dempsey on bass, and Luke McCarthy on drums.

Since September 2024, she has been hosting and performing regularly at her Jazz Jam at The Priory Tavern in north-west London, creating a welcoming space for jazz musicians to perform and connect with up-and-coming talent.

In January 2025, Maddie recorded a demo featuring five arrangements of her favourite jazz standards at Quiet Money Studios, mixed and recorded by Grammy nominated producer James McMillan and Maddie's vocal coach and British vocalist Claire Martin OBE. The tracks feature Columbus Sandor on piano, Guy Dempsey on bass, and Kai MacRae on drums. The demos can be found in Media, or online with links to Youtube and Soundcloud. Maddie is excited to get back in the studio to start working on her first EP!

Maddie is thrilled to be making her jazz festival debut with The Maddie Martin Quartet at Swanage Jazz Festival 2025, playing tunes from the Great American Songbook and more.
